  • WELCOME!

My philosophy of "Life, Laughter, and Love" was inspired by my wife when she had it engraved in my wedding ring, always there to remind me what's important. It's also what guides me to capture what I do, when I have a camera in my hand.

Friends will ask me if I consider it work, but I ask, how can it be? When I am blessed to be able to share such wonderful moments in peoples lives, to be shared forever, I can't call it work, but I can tell you it's the best job in the world. And I would love to share it with you!

Now, I always joke about someone getting married and a party broke out, but in this case, Kelly and Brad’s wedding taught me a new meaning of the word party! Such a fun time was had, from the flurry of hair and makeup getting ready at home, to the Detroit Masonic Temple ceremony, Campus Martius ice rink for photos, Joe Louis Arena, a pub downtown Detroit, and finally settling in at Pi in Southfield for the remainder of the night. Vows were exchanged, laughs were had, and one father of the groom removed his pants, and in the end, everyone had a wonderful day.

As a bonus to it all, I had the wonderful Miranda Hopkins along to second shoot with me, and the WONDERFUL Shelly from Simplicity Day of Co-ordination along to make sure things went smoothly! Kelly Lathrop - Derek, the photos are amazing! You were such a pleasure to work with and the results are incredible. If the rest of the photos turn out as a great as the sneak peek then I will put another check in the mail because the perfect memories are worth far more than we paid you 😉ReplyCancel

Labour Day weekend, I shot a wedding (The Fabulous Kristin + Tom Wedding! if you would like to know!) and there was this fantastic dancer on the floor all night in a black dress. Cut to a few months later, I get a phone call from someone asking about my availability to shoot their wedding, and I asked the usual “Where did you hear about me from?” to which she replies “I was wearing a black dress at Kristin and Tom’s Wedding and..” “YOU WERE THE AWESOME DANCER!” I blurted out! Some people and their smiles stand out, and I just KNEW it was her. We talked, got along great, and that’s how I met Nadine and her fiance Mike!

When it came time to do their engagement photos, we all expressed our love of the iconic Detroit skyline, and decided to just have some fun down on the Detroit Riverwalk! Not only was the weather perfect, but seriously, aren’t these two just adorable with each other? It just goes to show that even two people with over a foot difference between them in height can look perfect next to each other!

(although you might want to leave them comments here on the blog too, since Nadine gave up Facebook for Lent and won’t see them until right before their wedding in April!)

I knew from the first time I met them, that I would get along with Angie and Casey wonderfully… he’s a smart, fun guy, and she’s a fun and radiant woman….Little did I know the adventure that awaited me on their wedding day! Not only did Angie personify a beautiful “Snow Princess” (the wedding was in January), but Casey and his groomsmen proved a force to be reckoned with – ‘Staches ‘N Glasses! Oh, and YOUR party bus doesn’t seat 30? Ours did. Boom!

In the end, we rocked the Woodfield Country Club in Grand Blanc late into the night, and the Princess found her Prince. What an amazing day, and I hope you can feel it in the photos! Beautiful Stephanie. Fun Taylor. Christmas lights. Do I NEED to say anymore about how much I love sharing these photos? Even though it was FREEZING that night, we got through it with some fun photos, and more than a few laughs.

Jamie and Cyril got married to EACH OTHER, but I don’t think Cyril fully understood the package deal that came along with Jamie – about 50 energetic, partying, and awesome sorority sisters too! To say there was a party that night would be putting it lightly, Jamie and her ‘sisters’ were a force to be reckoned with, and Cyril did the right thing – hang on for the ride!

From scary big dogs, to stopping off at Dave and Busters for a little fun between the ceremony and reception at Club Monte Carlo, there was no shortage of excitement throughout the day! Please, won’t you hit ‘LIKE’ and leave the newlyweds a comment wishing them a HUGE Congratulations over on the facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/derekcooksonphotography !
