  • WELCOME!

My philosophy of "Life, Laughter, and Love" was inspired by my wife when she had it engraved in my wedding ring, always there to remind me what's important. It's also what guides me to capture what I do, when I have a camera in my hand.

Friends will ask me if I consider it work, but I ask, how can it be? When I am blessed to be able to share such wonderful moments in peoples lives, to be shared forever, I can't call it work, but I can tell you it's the best job in the world. And I would love to share it with you!

Lizzy was a breath of fresh air for me – so natural in front of the camera, she truly made my job easy capturing her for her Senior Photos. Graduating soon,  with all her beauty, confidence, and freespirited nature, this “Indigo Child” is going to be a force to be reckoned with! Look out world!

Brendan and Emily… when I think back to the definition of a “party” in my head, it will more than likely remember THIS wedding. Because I had SO much fun that night, I am posting a SUPERSIZED sneak peek for everyone to see!

From the rocking partybus taking us to Downtown Detroit (Hart Plaza in the freezing cold? Check! Hockeytown Cafe? CHECK!), to the lively reception at the very picturesque ‘Plymouth Meeting House’, I couldn’t be more honoured to share in a beautiful evening with a more fun bunch of people. Surrounded by their charismatic group of friends, it will be a night long remembered by all…congratulations to the newlyweds!

Another fun family session, this time out in Amherstburg Ontario, at the Navy Yard! They braved the cold of March to get out and have some beautiful family photos together one early morning in one of my favourite little towns! It couldn’t have been THAT cold though…we ended up getting ice cream at the amazing Waterfront Ice Cream Parlour for the tail end of our shoot! How fun…and tasty!
Enjoy the smiles, and don’t forget to check them out on the facebook page over at http://www.facebook.com/derekcooksonphotography !

Kelly and Brad had one idea they brought to me when we talked about their engagement photos….SNOW!

So we bundled up, and headed on out to beautiful Ann Arbor to play in the freshly laid blanket of snowy goodness! It may have been chilly out, but they brought the HEAT with their love for each other! (Ok, that may SOUND cheesy…but look at their smiles! It’s true!)

First we started at the University Law Quad, moved to the snowy (and unshovelled!) Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum, and ended up outside of “The Big House” to pay tribute to Brad’s Grandfather (you can see his class ring in one photo!). Add in a healthy dose of “Wolverine Pride” from these two, and we had a ton of fun for the camera!

Just in time to share for Valentines day!

Mary and Art have been together for a LONG time! So with this night being long overdue, I was completely honoured to be able to share it with them, capturing their intimate night with friends and family at the beautiful Meadowbrook Hall, in Rochester Michigan.

Since my wife was still in the hospital with our newborn baby bring born two days prior, I brought along a heavy-hitter to join me and take point this night, the talented Christina Misany-Trader of Trader Photography, as I wasn’t able to stay the entire time…and I was SO glad she was there! She brought her A-Game, and kept pushing ME to do better with her fantastic shots!

Such fun, such love….enjoy the photos!

Jill and Mike live in beautiful San Diego and are getting married back here in Michigan in the fall…so it made sense to have them come and freeze their butts off in the Detroit Winter!
We had a lot of fun downtown Detroit one early Sunday morning, having Campus Martius’ Ice Rink to ourselves, and ducking into the Compuware Building for a little warmth…not that they needed it, as you can tell the love between them is practically glowing!
