  • WELCOME!

My philosophy of "Life, Laughter, and Love" was inspired by my wife when she had it engraved in my wedding ring, always there to remind me what's important. It's also what guides me to capture what I do, when I have a camera in my hand.

Friends will ask me if I consider it work, but I ask, how can it be? When I am blessed to be able to share such wonderful moments in peoples lives, to be shared forever, I can't call it work, but I can tell you it's the best job in the world. And I would love to share it with you!

Sweet. Tender. Exhilarating. Happiness.

These words only touch the ground of the emotions running the night Brandon married Robin, the bride with the million-dollar smile. It was a GORGEOUS night on the waterfront at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, and it was a night that I will always cherish being a part of, with barely a dry eye in the house. It really was a night of emotions, pride, and sweet, sweet love.

Congratulations to both of you, I am proud to call you my friends, and wish you the best of luck on your new chapter of your lives!

When looking at these photos, find the song “Falling Slowly” by The Swell Season, from the soundtrack to the movie ‘Once’. You’ll get it, you’ll get it.

Kelsey and Mike had a beautiful, intimate wedding in some of the most charming places I’ve had the pleasure of shooting at. A beautiful church in downtown Chelsea Michigan, a nice outdoor cocktail reception, and then on to the highlight – a renovated vintage train station, the Chelsea Depot. Seriously, I couldn’t have loved the location more! Can we have more weddings at the Chelsea Depot everyone?

The love between Kelsey and Mike was thick in the air, and everyone was having a great time.  I truly felt honoured to be a part of the events that night, by seeing how much they were cherished by everyone around them! It was wonderful learning about their (much) travelled story from how they met all the way to bringing them back to Chelsea where Kelsey grew up. Congratulations to the both of them, and enjoy the photos!

They are posted on http://www.facebook.com/derekcooksonphotography as well, if you would like to tag anyone you know in the photos so they can enjoy them too! Share the love!

As Mary and Eric are the two last people on planet earth without facebook accounts, I thought I would celebrate their wedding here on the blog! Boasting the largest wedding party I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of (24 people!) , the day was filled with fun, dancing, laughs, dancing, doves, trains, fireworks, and dancing…did I mention dancing?

Special thanks go to my second shooter that day, the hardworking Melissa Zito, for her being able to wrangle all the guys together. Without her, I would have sweat a LOT more! The first two shots of the groom were hers, so if you see her, let her know you like her work too!

Enjoy, and they will also be posted on http://www.facebook.com/derekcooksonphotography in case anyone would like to tag their friends!

Mary and Eric wanted to do go somewhere creative when we started talking about their engagement session, and after much debate, they decided on heading downtown Detroit for the Detroit Institute for the Arts, the DIA! I had not been there since I was a student in grade school, so it was a whole new experience for me, but a worthwhile one for sure! So many beautiful works of art, and so many wonderful spots for us to take photos.

On this particular day, it was a BEAUTIFUL blue sky, so we couldn’t resist stepping outside for a few photos in  front of, err, IN the fountains along Woodward. Mary and Eric were good sports about it (what is it about me asking people to hop in water features???) and we had a blast making them look fantastic! I look forward to sharing their special wedding day with them, and I am very happy to share these photos with you!

Just one last fun one to show how much fun Eric had splashing Mary in the water!

Kelsey and Mike are getting married later this spring right around her hometown of Saline Michigan, and I will have the honour of being a part of it! But before we jump ahead of things and get married, how about we take some fun engagement photos in a beautiful little park in Saline, right alongside a quaint little creek? Don’t mind if I do!

Seriously, this park was small on size, but huge on picturesque quality! The creek with the old bench overlooking it seems straight out of the hallmark card! and off in the distance, there was a giant white swan swimming in the river, not coming close enough to us to get it in the photos…but it was just adding to the overall quaintness of the scene. Kelsey and Mike were so cute themselves, and super nice as well! I look forward to being a part of their fun wedding day! See you June 19th!
